CHAPTER 15

Academic Acclaim

Ross drove slowly back to his home in Indianapolis. Earlier in the day, he had rushed to the medical center where Forella had been admitted shortly after landing at the airport when she and Angela returned from New York. Fortunately, the symptoms of confusion and slightly slurred speech quickly disappeared, and the physician at the ER assured Ross that the TIA was minor with no permanent effects. Forella was released yet that evening, and she insisted on going home rather than staying in Indianapolis. Ross drove his mother and Angela to Bloomington, and, after convincing Forella to let Angela or Annie sleep on the couch near her room, he reluctantly headed home himself. He switched off the radio that he typically left on when he stopped the car. Instead, he let his thoughts harken to the deep unease he had felt when he received Angela’s call from the hospital. Few things in life had ever shaken him so much as this clear signal that some day he would have to accept Forella’s dying. Ross knew his mother was his own timeless link to the world—not simply the physical source of his being but, more importantly, the one other person who loved his life as he did and shared countless memories. He dreaded the day he would have to continue on without that vital connection he had known from birth, from his first sensation of consciousness.
